Windflower had heard the freezing rain start overnight but didn’t know the power was out until he felt the chill in the early morning. That got him out of bed at the B&B to make sure everything was okay and that the emergency generator had kicked in. It would keep the lights on and allow him to start the stove, which was propane-powered but not enough to power the old oil furnace in the basement.

They kept the heat on a minimum over the winter. They’d learned their lessons with burst pipes and thousands of dollars damage in a previous winter. And he’d turned it up when they came in last night. But it wouldn’t take long for the big old inn to cool down. Not enough to freeze the pipes in the short term, but chilly enough to wake you up. Although he couldn’t hear much from the guest rooms. Maybe the cognac was still keeping them warm and asleep.

He made a cup of coffee and checked the weather outside. There was a beautiful glaze on top of the snow and on every surface the freezing rain had touched. Deathly beautiful, he’d once heard it described. While he was watching, he saw Herb Stoodley’s van come into view and slide into a parking place in front of the Mug-Up. He opened the door and called out hello.

Herb waved back and motioned for him to come over. He grabbed his coat and boots and went outside. He started out quickly, but after a few slips and slides, he gingerly made his way across the street and into the dimly lit café.

“Morning, Herb,” he called out.

“Morning, Winston,” said Herb. “I’m just getting these space heaters set up. We can run our stoves and the emergency lights and a couple of these, but that’s about it with the back-up running.”

“Enough to do breakfast?” asked Windflower.

“Absolutely,” said Herb. “What can I get you?”

“I’m okay for now,” said Windflower. “But I’ve got a couple of guests who will be hungry when they wake up.”

“Oh, those young fellers. Marie said they were here last night,” said Herb. “They seemed nice to me when I met them. Very polite. Although I was just assuming they were polite. I don’t understand much German.”

Windflower decided to say little about his German friends. No point in getting Herb upset or letting the Germans know that he and the RCMP were on to them.

“If you can serve them, I’ll send them over when they’re ready,” said Windflower. “Thanks, Herb.” And Windflower was out of there before Herb could ask anything else.
